Shambhavi Mahamudra vs Isha Kriya
Shambhavi Mahamudra vs Isha Kriya is really a question about two doors into the same house. Both come from Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation.
Both are called kriyas, a word Isha translates as an inward action.
But one door is open to anyone with a phone and twelve spare minutes tonight. The other is locked until someone hands you the key in person or over a live session.
Also, it costs money to get into the room.
Here is how these two practices differ, and how to choose.
Shambhavi Mahamudra vs Isha Kriya at a Glance
Isha Kriya is a free, 12–18 minute guided meditation anyone can learn today. Shambhavi Mahamudra is a 21-minute breath-based practice taught only through a paid Inner Engineering initiation.

What Isha Kriya Actually Asks of You?
Isha Kriya is a three-stage seated meditation built on slow breathing, a silent thought, a spoken sound, and stillness.
Isha’s own instruction sheet is short enough to fit on one page.
You sit cross-legged facing east, palms up on your thighs, face slightly lifted. You breathe slowly while thinking “I am not the body” on the inhale and “I am not even the mind” on the exhale, for seven to eleven minutes.
Then you sound a long “A,” like the “a” in father, seven times from just below the navel. Then you simply sit for five or six minutes.
Isha is firm about the rhythm: at least twelve minutes each time, twice daily for 48 days, a cycle it calls a mandala, or once daily for 90 days.
The sheet also asks you not to change anything and not to stop midway.
What the practice asks for most is consistency, and some people give it exactly that. In a testimonial featured on Patch, Amy Raymond described the habit this way:
“I practice twice a day, every day and have not missed a day for the last 11 months.”
— Amy Raymond, testimonial in an Isha event listing on Patch, event dated December 6, 2025
We looked hard at whether a free practice can deliver anything real in our review of whether Isha Kriya actually works.
What Makes Shambhavi Mahamudra Different?

Shambhavi Mahamudra combines several deep, controlled breathing techniques with muscular locks called bandhas, followed by open meditation.
That makes it more physically engaged than Isha Kriya.
A 2018 paper in a peer-reviewed journal describes the structure plainly.
For about fifteen minutes, practitioners use several deep, controlled breathing techniques while engaging bandhas, the locks in the abdomen and pelvic floor.
The final five minutes or so are open-monitoring meditation, where you watch without steering.
Isha frames it as a practice of alignment.
On its Inner Engineering page, it says the kriya brings body, mind, emotions and energies into harmony.
The biggest difference is not the technique but the doorway. Isha Kriya is published openly. Shambhavi is never published.
It is transmitted, in Isha’s word, during the final step of Inner Engineering, either online through Inner Engineering Completion Online or at an in-person program or retreat.

Can You Learn Shambhavi Mahamudra From YouTube?
No. Isha teaches Shambhavi only through initiation, and practitioners themselves warn against learning it from videos or written notes.
Search for Shambhavi and you will find step-by-step notes on document-sharing sites and unofficial recordings sold online. None of them is the initiation Isha offers, and none comes with the corrections an instructor gives in person.
Practitioners tend to guard this line themselves. Writing about her own initiation, Katherine R. Pierce added a plain warning for her readers:
“please do not Google this tool and practice without being initiated”
— Katherine R. Pierce, Letters from Walden (Substack), November 26, 2023

Isha Kriya is the opposite case. Isha wants you to learn it from a recording, and it publishes the guided audio in its apps.

How Much Does Each Practice Cost?
Isha Kriya costs nothing. Shambhavi Mahamudra requires the paid Inner Engineering program, and the price depends on your country, language and format.
In India, Isha lists Inner Engineering Online at ₹3,500 in English and ₹1,500 in Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
The Shambhavi transmission comes as the completion step, online or in person, and in-person and retreat formats are priced separately.
In the United States, Isha offers the program to veterans at a sponsored $100, refunded in full if they complete it within 30 days.
It also lists special pricing for seniors, military, police and full-time students.
For a full breakdown by format, see our guide to Inner Engineering with Sadhguru.
What Does the Research Say About Each?
Both practices have a little early research behind them, and neither has large, long-term controlled trials. Shambhavi’s evidence is somewhat stronger.
For Isha Kriya, the best-known study comes from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, as reported by Isha.
More than 300 operating-room professionals completed a stress survey.
After a single session of Isha Kriya, their overall mood disturbance dropped significantly, with anger showing the biggest change.
That is a meaningful signal, but one sitting is not a 48-day cycle.
For Shambhavi, a 2017 study followed 142 people who learned the kriya at a three-day retreat and practiced it for 21 minutes daily.
After six weeks, participants reported lower perceived stress and higher general well-being than at the start.
Those results were self-reported, and the study had no control group.
Isha’s own research page separately reports a 41% stress reduction after six weeks of Shambhavi practice and a 46% reduction in depression scores over the same period, drawn from the wider 2022 dataset of 6,892 practitioners.
The depression finding specifically comes from a companion paper in Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2022.
The researchers of the 2018 paper put it frankly: very few independent studies exist on Shambhavi specifically.
Treat both practices as promising, not proven.
Which One Should You Choose?
Start with Isha Kriya if you want to test a daily meditation habit for free.
Choose Shambhavi Mahamudra if you are ready to commit money, a weekend and 21 minutes a day to a structured program.
Choose Isha Kriya if:
- You have never kept a daily meditation habit and want to find out whether you can.
- You want to start today, without registering for anything.
- Cost is a real barrier right now.
Choose Shambhavi Mahamudra if:
- If you have already held a daily practice for a few weeks and want more depth.
- You want live instruction, corrections and ongoing support.
- If you are drawn to breath-based practice specifically.
Long-term Shambhavi practitioners often speak about it in the language of years, not weeks. Commenting on Sadhguru’s blog post about the practice, one reader wrote:
“Been practicing for many years! A truly powerful practice indeed!”
— Swapna Jayakumar, Goodreads comment on Sadhguru’s post published September 14, 2021

If you are also weighing Art of Living’s breathwork, our comparison of Sudarshan Kriya and Shambhavi Mahamudra covers that choice.
Can You Practice Isha Kriya and Shambhavi Together?
Isha presents Isha Kriya as its meditation for beginners and Inner Engineering as its flagship program, so many people treat one as the path to the other.
Ask your Inner Engineering instructor how to fit both into your day.
Isha’s own event listings put them side by side: “Isha Kriya / Meditation for Beginners” next to “Introduction to Inner Engineering.”
Doing Isha Kriya first costs nothing, and it gives you something useful before you commit to anything larger: proof that you can sit still every day.
The 48-day cycle is a fair test. If you finish it, you already have the discipline Shambhavi asks for.
Key Points on Shambhavi Mahamudra vs Isha Kriya
